Building the Foundation of a Volunteer Program

A volunteer program is a valuable resource that supports community organizations in the achievement of their mission. However, the challenges of a volunteer program can often outshine its benefits without the correct framework and resources in place. In this three-hour interactive workshop, you will learn how to build a strong program foundation to successfully engage volunteers.

Learning Objectives Include:

  • Recognize the importance of a volunteer program purpose statement
  • Determine criteria for appropriate volunteer roles and their position descriptions
  • Identify the basic tenants of risk management
  • Define resources needed to manage an effective volunteer program

ABN Nonprofit Human Resources Certificate:

This workshop counts as 3 credits towards the ABN Nonprofit Human Resources Certificate. To receive this certificate, a participant must earn 18 credits (six qualifying courses) within a two-year period. CFRE Credits:

Full participation in Building the Foundation of a Volunteer Program is applicable for 3 points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or re-certification. For more information about the Certified Fund Raising Executive credential visit www.cfre.org.

 

Level:

This course is intended for beginners with little to no experience in the topic. Please keep in mind, the levels are simply a guideline. Please contact Chloe Perry at cperry@betternonprofits.org for specific questions about the level of this course.

 

BIO:

Melanie Vincent, Knox County Director for Volunteer East Tennessee, helps manage our region's HandsOn Network volunteer center. She works with nonprofit organizations to manage and effectively recruit volunteers throughout East Tennessee. Over the last two years she has developed the Partner Program, which provides volunteer managers with tools necessary to successfully engage volunteers. She also developed the East Tennessee Volunteer Management Association, the region's first professional association for volunteer managers to share best practices, resources and encourage development both personally and professionally. 

Melanie is a graduate of The University of Findlay and Bowling Green State University where she earned her Master's degree in College Student Personnel. She enjoys participating in young professional initiatives and spending time with her friends and dog.
