How to Assess, Nominate, and Develop a Top Notch Nonprofit Board

This training will invite participants to consider a process that can assess and evaluate their present board and identify skills and talents needed in future board members. This training will also review a process for nomination and recruitment of future board members.

Learning Objectives Include:

  • Appreciate the value of volunteerism in nonprofit organizations; especially as it relates to boards and committees
  • Understand the board development concepts of Assessment, Nomination, and Recruitment
  • Acknowledge the responsibility of training volunteers through orientation, establishing relationships, and examining the roles of staff and board
  • Become familiar with tools and resources available to develop volunteers and boards


This course is intended for intermediate professionals with 1-2 years’ experience in the topic. Please keep in mind, the levels are simply a guideline. Please contact Chloe Perry at for specific questions about the level of this course.



Jack Bender graduated from Abilene Christian University, Abilene, Texas with degrees in Psychology and Business.   He completed a Masters in Human Resource Development through University Associates in San Diego, California. 

Jack spent 37 years in non-profit work with the Young Men’s Christian Association.  He began as a program director in Amarillo, Texas for three years.  He started the YMCA in a small town (Henderson) in East Texas where he spent six years.   Then, became a Branch Executive and Vice President for the Atlanta Metro YMCA where he served eight years.  He served on the National Staff of the YMCA of the USA (three years) working with the YMCAs in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.  In 1988 be became the Chief Executive Officer of the Knoxville Metro YMCA serving 13 years then returned to the YMCA of the USA working with all the YMCAs in North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina.  His work on the National Staff was focused on Organizational Development especially in the areas of volunteer development (board development) and strategic planning.

Jack retired from the YMCA in 2006 but still consults (part-time) with non-profit organizations especially in the area of board development.
