Nonprofit Accounting: What Every Nonprofit Decision Maker Needs to Know

The accounting and reporting perspective of a nonprofit environment is different than that of the for-profit environment. Bridging the mission and activities to accounting and reporting can be insightful and begins with a basic understanding. This course is intended to provide nonprofit accounting basics. Whether you need a refresher or an introduction, this seminar is a perfect option for board members, preparers, administrators, and support staff.

Learning Objectives Include:

  • To provide an overview of the key differences between Nonprofits and For Profit Entities
  • To empower participants to grasp the basic competencies specific to accounting for nonprofits

  •  To present recent standards that affect the way nonprofits report on activities

  • To overview relative importance of net assets without donor restrictions and net assets with donor restrictions


This course is intended for beginners with little to no experience in the topic. Please keep in mind, the levels are simply a guideline. Please contact Eddie Crim at for specific questions about the level of this course.



Dr. Amelia Hart is a Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) and holds licenses as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Tennessee and Georgia.  She serves on the Accounting Career and Education Committee (ACE) in Tennessee (TSCPA).  Dr. Hart currently lectures in the Haslam College of Business at the University of Tennessee Knoxville and provides consulting services as a member of Hart Accounting and Professional Services.


Hart’s experience spans directing the financial reporting process for both profit-driven and nonprofit organizations and reviewing and designing internal controls over financial reporting. Within academia, Dr. Hart is known for her ability to engage, connect, and communicate complex financial reporting principles that challenges a learner to become a critical thinker.   Her instructional engagement have strategically equipped her to engage diverse constituents in common dialogue that provide a platform for new ideas, shared viewpoints, and opposing perspectives. 


Hart remains engage in her community with service on the Board of Directors of nonprofits, as a presenter at Continuing Professional Education (CPE) seminars, churches, and other civic organizations.  


Hart is a member of the American Accounting Association (AAA), American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), the Georgia Society of CPAs (GSCPA), and the Tennessee Society of CPAs (TSCPA). She completed her Bachelor’s degree at Lee University, Master’s degree at the University of Tennessee (Chattanooga), and her doctoral studies at Anderson University (Indiana).
