Government Advocacy for Nonprofits: Speaking Truth to Power

The ability to effectively communicate with elected and other government officials at the local, state and federal levels is essential for many nonprofits, particularly those for whom government policy plays a key role in the accomplishment of their missions. This course will assist nonprofit leaders in developing an effective approach to influencing public policy makers.

Learning Objectives Include:

  • Summarize the components of an effective advocacy program
  • Recognize the law in Tennessee as it relates to advocacy for nonprofits
  • Understand effective strategies for working with elected and other governmental officials

ABN Nonprofit Marketing Certificate:

This workshop counts as 3 credits towards the ABN Nonprofit Marketing Certificate. To receive this certificate, a participant must earn 18 credits (six qualifying courses) within a two-year period. CFRE Credits:

Full participation in Advanced Grant Writing is applicable for 3 points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or re-certification. For more information about the Certified Fundraising Executive credential visit www.cfre.org.

 

 

Level:

This course is intended for intermediate professionals with 1-2 years’ experience in the topic. Please keep in mind, the levels are simply a guideline. Please contact Eddie Crim at ecrim@betternonprofits.org for specific questions about the level of this course.

 

BIO:

Dr. Jerry Askew brings nearly 40 years of nonprofit experience to ABN, having held executive positions in higher education, philanthropy and healthcare. Since arriving in Knoxville in 1985, Jerry has served as Dean of Students and Associate Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Affairs at the University of Tennessee, President of the East Tennessee Foundation and Senior Vice President of the St. Mary’s/Mercy Health Systems. In addition, Jerry has served on the boards of over 40 nonprofit organizations at the local, state and national levels. He received his BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, MS from the University of Memphis and PhD from The Ohio State University. Jerry is also an ordained deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee.
