Fundraising for Faith-Based Nonprofits

Participants will learn how to apply fundraising best-practices to the unique advantages and challenges of a faith-based approach. Topics will include donor development within and outside of faith communities, as well as opportunities for government, foundation and corporate funding. This workshop is intended for organizations motivated by faith but whose primary purpose is not religious in nature, i.e. proselytizing, religious education, etc.

Learning Objectives Include:

  • Describe the advantages and challenges of being a faith-based organization.
  • Understand the difference between “mission” and “motivation” and its effect on fundraising.
  • Develop strategies for working with churches and other faith communities.
  • Apply universal best practices to their organization’s fundraising program.

ABN Fund Development Certificate:

This workshop counts as 3 credits towards the ABN Fund Development Certificate. To receive this certificate, a participant must earn 18 credits (six qualifying courses) within a two-year period. Credits are tracked on individual sub-accounts (not admin accounts) as course credit stays with the individual. For more information, contact Eddie Crim at ecrim@betternonprofits.org.

 

CFRE Credits:

Full participation in Advanced Grant Writing is applicable for 3 points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or re-certification. For more information about the Certified Fundraising Executive credential visit www.cfre.org.

 

 

Level:

This course is intended for beginners with little to no experience in the topic. Please keep in mind, the levels are simply a guideline. Please contact Eddie Crim at ecrim@betternonprofits.org for specific questions about the level of this course.

 

BIO:

Freddi Birdwell is a seasoned fundraising professional with more than 25 years invested in fundraising and nonprofit management. Her progressive career includes extensive work with the American Cancer Society, where she served in a variety of leadership positions, and with Catholic Charities of East Tennessee, where she spent eight years as Director of Development and Community Relations. She has worked at the local, state and regional levels.

In both organizations, Freddi was a part of and sometimes the catalyst for significant transformation and growth.  Her experience inspired her to become a consultant and trainer, with a passion for helping small to medium nonprofits reach the next level of service to their communities. 

Freddi holds the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential, is a past president of the Great Smoky Mountain Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and was honored as the 2017 Fundraising Professional of the Year. She has also served on the board of the Smoky Mountain Planned Giving Council and as 2018 president of the Knoxville Association of Women Executives. Freddi holds a B.S. in Secondary Education from the University of Memphis and completed additional course work in Public Relations at UT Knoxville. She is the proud grandma of three and, in her spare time, loves to ham it up on any community theatre stage that will have her.
