How to Prepare a Successful Annual Appeal Letter

It’s time to start planning your annual appeal letter! 2018 can be the year to revamp your annual appeal to increase your return on investment. ABN Expert Kim Lauth will educate us on new ways to envision our appeal letters. We’ll discuss what donors really think about annual appeals, the characteristics of effective appeals, and new trends in annual giving.

Learning Objectives Include:

  • Understand the elements to include in an appeal to ensure successful outcome
  • Apply strategies to engage board members in the year end appeal process
  • Develop and implement a year end appeal plan

ABN Fund Development Certificate:

This workshop counts as 3 credits towards the ABN Fund Development Certificate. To receive this certificate, a participant must earn 18 credits (six qualifying courses) within a two-year period. CFRE Credits:

Full participation in Advanced Grant Writing is applicable for 3 points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or re-certification. For more information about the Certified Fundraising Executive credential visit




This course is intended for beginners with little to no experience in the topic. Please keep in mind, the levels are simply a guideline. Please contact Eddie Crim at for specific questions about the level of this course.



Kim Lauth, CFREhas over 27 years of experience in the nonprofit field and has helped raise millions of dollars for charitable causes.  For the last 5 years she has owned Kim Lauth Consulting, LLC, a full-service consultancy focused on helping charitable organizations build their capacity through fundraising, coaching, strategy and training.She is also an expert trainer and consultant with the Alliance for Better Nonprofits in Knoxville, TN.


She is a past president of the Smoky Mountain Planned Giving Council and the Great Smoky Mountain Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).  She was named “Fundraising Professional of the Year” by AFP in 2016.Kim has held the CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) certification since 2002.


A sought-after speaker and trainer, Kimlaunched the “Nonprofit Superpowers” podcast and video series in 2017.


Kim serves on several local boards and recently completed a 2-year term on the national board of directors for the League of Women Voters, in Washington, D.C.


In her free time, you can find her, along with her husband Kent seeing her favorite 1980’s bands in concert. She’s the one dancing like nobody's watching.
